The Healer's Art Faculty Development Workshop

A CME Training Workshop for Physicians with Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D.

This workshop is an opportunity to learn the principles of transformational medical education and gain greater satisfaction in teaching.

Workshop Description

ISHI's innovative curriculum, The Healer's Art, brings together two mutually supportive learning communities, medical students, and practicing and teaching physicians, in a discovery model that encourages honest and mutually respectful sharing of experience, beliefs, aspirations and personal truths. This course has been taught at UCSF for 17 years and will be offered at 59 schools during 2008-2009. The Healer's Art offers medical students a safe learning environment for a personal in-depth exploration of the time-honored values of service, relationship, commitment and calling that have long been at the heart of the practice of medicine. The course enables students to maintain and strengthen their service intention and perspective as they meet the pressures and demands of medical training.

Faculty Development WorkshopsISHI's newest faculty development workshop is designed to enable medical school faculty to plan and implement The Healer's Art. During the five days of intensive training you will personally experience the transformative aspects of each session of The Healer's Art course, and then have the opportunity to explore he principles and approaches of this innovative discovery model approach to learning professionalism. Faculty will gain confidence with innovative techniques of professional education and their outcomes and join a national community of supportive faculty committed to holistic medical education.

This retreat workshop is held at Commonweal in one of the most beautiful natural settings on the Northern California Seashore. Educators will have the opportunity to develop colleagueship with others who share their values and vision, deepen existing friendships, and join a growing network of medical educators who are bringing The Healer's Art to medical education nationwide. The retreat also offers gourmet vegetarian cuisine, morning yoga, ocean lullabies and time for reflection and walks on the beach. Faculty Development Workshops

Educational Goals

The over-all goals of The Healer's Art Faculty Development Workshop are:
  1. To provide support for medical school faculty in the planning and implementation of The Healer's Art curriculum.
  2. To provide support for medical school faculty in deepening and preserving the human dimension of medical students and medical education.
  3. To validate values and meaning as a legitimate goal in medical education.
  4. To foster the appreciation of curriculum as a transformative as well as an informative process.
  5. To provide an opportunity for medical school faculty to:
    • Expand their perceived task as medical educators.
    • Gain competency in a new model of medical education.
    • Move from a teaching model to a mutual learning model.
    • Gain skill in small group participatory leadership.
    • Experience the core values of the Hippocratic Oath (compassion, service, harmlessness, reverence for life and covenant) as a way of life.
    • Build collegial relationships that are non-judgmental and non-competitive.
  6. To foster the recognition of the potential for harmless and healing relationship between student and teacher, professional colleagues and physician and patient.
  7. To enable faculty to deepen their enthusiasm and inspiration and renew their commitment to teaching.
  8. Use the techniques of Generous Listening and presence to clarify cultural sensitivities, needs and preferences in patients and students.
  9. Help students use the techniques of Generous Listening and presence to clarify cultural sensitivities, needs and preferences in patients in the areas of focus in The Healer's Art course.
  10. Recognize those areas of clinical focus in the teaching of students where cultural sensitivities may be hidden.
  11. Recognize interactional areas in the teaching of students where customs and cultural sensitivities may be operating.
  12. Increase competence and confidence in eliciting those sensitivities from students and patients and acting upon them.
  13. Help student's have greater confidence and competence in recognizing and responding to the cultural and linguistic needs and preferences of patients in the areas of focus in The Healer's Art course.

Educational Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  • Implement an experiential, transformative curriculum in professionalism
  • Compare the transformational potential of the Discovery Model to the traditional cognitive/intellectual educational model
  • Name the parameters of an interactional space of "Harmlessness" and its importance in transformational medical education
  • Identify the resources and barriers to the development of transformational medical school curriculum at their medical schools
  • List the characteristics of a Community of Inquiry approach to medical education
  • Share the meaning of their work with peer professionals
  • Lead a class exercise for
    • uncovering personal and professional meaning
    • discovering healing responses to the losses of others
    • learning generous listening and presence
    • exploring values through narrative
    • exploring service and calling
  • Run an FMM group for faculty colleagues and students
  • Use elements of ritual in teaching that are personally and professionally relevant to the medical student's experience
  • Discuss the shadow of health care education and strategies to detoxify it
  • Discuss the power of story to prevent and heal the wounds of medical school training
  • Discuss the antecedents to establishing a level playing field between teacher and student
  • Discuss the importance of silence in transformational medical school education
  • Discuss grief and its importance in preventing burnout
  • Identify 2 specific clinical areas in their own clinical work where cultural sensitivities may be operating.
  • Identify 2 specific areas in their own teaching where cultural sensitivities may be operating.
  • Identify the areas in the Healer's Art curriculum where CLC issues may be present.
  • Identify 4 specific interactional areas in their own teaching where cultural sensitivities or customs may be operating.
  • Create question schedules to elicit culturally sensitive information and preferences from colleagues, students and patients of differing cultural backgrounds.
  • Feel confident and competent in teaching students the CLC issues in the areas of the Healer's Art course.
