Finding Meaning in Medicine
(www.meaninginmedicine.org) is ISHI's outreach program for physicians, medical students and other healthcare professionals and educators. It is a very simple and replicable group process that enables the participants to uncover the deep meaning that lies beneath the daily routine of practice, and to find strength within a community of physicians or other practitioners who share the values of compassion, harmlessness, reverence for life, and service.

In more than a decade of work at Commonweal, we have seen hundreds of physicians benefit from coming together in genuine community. We have learned that a simple form of group process can enable us to listen deeply to one another, rediscover the joy of our work and receive the kind of healing that only fellow physicians can bring to one another. This simple approach is no cost, low-effort, and high-return — if you have two hours a month, three or four physician friends, a living room or some other informal meeting place, then you can make this happen in your community. Similar groups are starting around the country for medical students, residents, nurses and other healthcare practitioners. We're pleased to offer support to these individuals, as well; in 2003 the FMM website opened its registration to medical students and other healthcare practitioners. Separate secure, password protected discussions are available to the various professions.

Many physicians around the country have started Finding Meaning in Medicine groups and many more groups are in formation. Starting a group is quite simple and requires very little time and planning. If you would like to organize an FMM group in your community, the FMM website will help you. Online you'll find all the resources you'll need to start an FMM group, including the FMM Resource Guide ("starter kit"). You'll also be able to network and receive the support of your colleagues and other group facilitators around the country, participate in an online FMM group discussion, find references and inspiration, or just stay connected with physicians and other healthcare practitioners who share your values. You will also find a listing of groups and interested individuals around the country, in case you'd rather join an existing group, or join forces in starting one.
